2001 Mens Singles Final: Ivanisevic vs Rafter

Wimbledon Finals hardly come much better than the 2001 showpiece which saw giant Croat Goran Ivanisevic defeat Aussie Pat Rafter in five sets.

Ivanisevic, who had reached the final on three previous occasions, was deemed a no-hoper going into the tournament, after being off the circuit for considerable time following injury. He had slipped down to no.125 in the world rankings, and even had to wear the Wimbledon clubs standard Tennis attire, as he had no sponsor.

The wildcard fired through the rounds however, and set up a semi-final against Tim Henman. After being dominated by the Brit, rain delayed play, and the following day Ivanisevic overturned a 2-1 set deficit to beat Henman and reach the final for a fourth time. There he would meet twice US Open champion Pat Rafter, who had also been eluded the Wimbledon title before.

Yet again a heavy underdog going into the match, Ivanisevic defied the odds to overcome Rafter, as he sank to his knees on winning one of the most remarkable finals in history.
