World No.3 Andy Murray opened his campaign in comprehensive, if not lethal fashion against Robert Kendrick, winning comfortably in four sets over the battling American, who really raised his game in an attempt to upset the Scot. The key for Murray is to ease himself into the tournament, and to gradually improve with every round - and he will have to sharpen up his game when he takes on Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis.
Gulbis, 22, is ranked only two places above Murray’s first victim Kendrick, although on real terms he is a top 40 player. Indeed Gulbis had soared up the World Rankings to No.38 last season, but has subsequently fallen back to No.74 after injury problems which were a result of a more strenuous fitness regime.
Andy Murray needs to be more ruthless against Gulbis, who will match the Glaswegian for power if nothing else. Murray has already declared that he will need to take the next step up if he is to beat Gulbis, which will be a formality if he can get his accurate first serves in, and if he can get into his stride around the court.
Expect a more stylish performance from Murray in round two - he should be far too classy for the Latvian, and he is far more athletic around the court. Gulbis does have a decent level of ability however, and if he can use his strengths to good effect, he may take a set off the British No.1. A 3-1 set victory for Murray is 5/2 with Bet 365, and that would be a satisfying result for him. The Scot is 1/16 to progress, whilst Gulbis is 7/1 to end Britain’s hopes of a Wimbledon winner.
