This is without doubt the pick of the second round ties from the Men’s draw, as the young pretender Juan Martin Del Potro takes on the experienced, battling former Wimbledon Champion Lleyton Hewitt.
The Argentine, 23, has showed great potential since his arrival on the Men’s circuit, and has progressed at a rate of knots to soar up the World Rankings to No.5. His recent run to the semi-finals at the French Open was nothing short of excellent, and he has reached the quarter Finals of both the U.S and Australian Open already in his short career.
So far however, grass has not been a good surface for Del Potro - he has failed to progress beyond the second round at Wimbledon since he turned pro, indicating that he is perhaps at his weakest on the turf. By contrast, Lleyton Hewitt’s best surface is the grass, he won Wimbledon in 2002 and is a four times Queen’s Club Champion.
The Aussie, 28, has seen the Men’s game pass him by somewhat in recent years, as players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have all moved past him. Many people also feel that Hewitt was a Wimbledon Champion when the competition was weak - players such as Samprass, Agassi and Rafter were moving out of the game and the new order of greatness had yet to establish itself.
Hewitt is more determined than ever before however to prove that his victory at SW19 was no fluke, and that his ageing legs can still mix it up with the top young players of today. A win against Del Potro would be hugely satisfying for the Aussie, and it may get people talking about the gritty Australian again.
Del Potro is a strong favourite with Bet 365 at 4/11, however with his grass court credentials questionable at the least, Hewitt’s match odds of 2/1 look very appealing. The Aussie is tough to beat on grass and he will have the whole of the Centre Court crowd behind him.
