Aussie Lleyton Hewitt has really proved what a battling warhorse he is in this year’s tournament, and he has defied his world ranking and critics to reach the last eight. The 2002 Wimbledon Champion was adamant before the start of the tournament that he could sustain a title challenge once more and he has done just that. Hewitt was quite sublime against fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro in round two, winning in straight sets, and he has since fought back amazingly against Radek Stepanek to progress in five sets.
Psychologically however, the edge in this tie may be with American Roddick, who has defeated Hewitt in their previous four meetings. Although Roddick has suggested that this counts for nothing, it may be a big factor should Roddick take a first set lead. Anyone would be a fool to disregard Hewitt, however he will have to lift his game once again to beat Roddick, and the feeling is that physically he may be a spent force after three tough matches.
At 28, Hewitt may not have the energy to match big serving Roddick, who has generally cantered through his first four matches to date. Roddick is a massive 4/11 favourite with Bet 365 to overcome Hewitt, who is 9/4 to beat his rival. This could well be the match of the round, and could go the distance - a five set Roddick victory is 11/2.
