Borg Sees Murray As The Real Deal

Wimbledon Live Staff - 17 Jun 2009

Five times Wimbledon Champion and Tennis legend Bjorn Borg thinks that Britain’s Andy Murray has the necessary tools to win the grass court showpiece this year, and that reigning champion Rafael Nadal may have more against him than his knee problems.

Borg has followed the progress of World No.3 Murray ever since he burst onto the scene a few year’s ago, and has been clearly impressed by his rapid improvement. The Swede, commenting on Murray’s recent good run in the French Open, and Wimbledon 2009 said:

"He can play on all kinds of surfaces and I was very impressed with what he did on the clay court surface. I don't think he was ready to win Wimbledon last year but it is a different story now."

Borg is not the first person to lend Murray backing for this year’s tournament at SW19, with the likes of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski sharing the opinion that Murray is ready to win his first Grand Slam event. However the support being shown by Borg, who won all of his Wimbledon titles in consecutive year’s, will give the greatest of confidence to the man from Glasgow.

Borg was also keen to discuss Rafael Nadal’s chances of successful title defence, and he believes that the Spaniard will be hindered by his recent disappointment at Roland Garros:

"He did not play at Queen's this year, and I do not know if his injury is serious or not, but mentally he has not done it this year," said Borg. "He has been playing long matches and winning most of the clay court events, but coming into Paris he lost against the Swedish guy and was very disappointed after that."

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal are vying for second favouritism behind Roger Federer in the market for the Men’s Singles at SW19, Murray is currently best priced 3/1 with Paddy Power, whilst Nadal is 4/1 with Victor Chandler to retain his Wimbledon crown.
