Young French Tennis ace Gael Monfils has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a wrist injury organisers declared on Thursday.
Monfils, who would have been seeded No.14 for the grass court showpiece, fell and injured his wrist
during his second round match against Andrey Golubev at Queen’s Club, which ruled him out of the
rest of the Wimbledon warm up tournament. The 22-year old was hopeful of a swift recovery so to be ready for the third Grand Slam Event of the year, but it has been revealed that the injury is more serious than first thought.
The Frenchman, who burst onto the scene at the same time as Britain’s Andy Murray, has endured a frustrating few year’s, where injuries have prevented him from fully realising the potential which was shown when he met Andy Murray in the junior final at Wimbledon. Monfil’s will be missing Wimbledon for the second year in succession, something which is bound to harm his World Ranking at the end of the season.
Roger Federer is still favourite for Wimbledon 2009 and is evens with Bet 365 to reclaim his crown. The Championships begin on June 22, with the draw being made on June 19.
