Novak Djokovic, who will be number one on Monday, came into today's Wimbledon final as the underdog with plenty to prove but the Serb managed to silence his doubters in fantastic style to beat reigning champion Rafael Nadal in four sets.
The new world number one dominated the early exchanges of the match, producing what must rank as some of the best tennis ever seen on Centre Court to take the first set 6-4 then claim an early break in the second. Nadal seemed stunned and allowed his usual high standards to slip, with Djokovic running out a comfortable 6-1 winner.
It looked like the 24-year-old would then run away with the match but the Spaniard fought back, taking an early break of serve in the third set, which he won 6-1. The Wimbledon crowd then began to sense a comeback from Nadal but it was short lived.
Djokovic immediately broke the two times WImbledon champion's serve in the fourth set and raced into a 2-0 advantage. A lucky net cord saw Nadal level things at 2-2 but Djokovic didn't allow himself to be fazed and his defensive play was simply too much for the man he replaces as world number one.
Nadal cut a dejected figure when some uncharacteristic errors saw Djokovic claim a break in the eighth game of the fourth set to move to 5-3 ahead. The crowd, which included Serbian President Boris Tadic rose to applaud the new champion, who held his nerve under immense pressure to claim the Wimbledon 2011 title.
It was Djokovic's third Grand Slam win of his career and second of 2011. It was also the first time he has beaten Rafael Nadal in a five set match and in doing so he became the first man since 2002 that wasn't either Nadal or Federer to win the Wimbledon title.
