Robson Handed Hantuchova Test

Wimbledon Live Staff - 19 Jun 2009

Britain’s Laura Robson has been handed a daunting tie in the first round at Wimbledon as she is set to face Slovakia’s Daniella Hantuchova.

Robson, 15, will be the youngest female to take to the grass at SW19 since Martina Hingis made her debut at the age of 14, back in 1994. The Brit was given a wildcard under exceptional circumstances for this year’s tournament by the All England Club, meaning that she could participate despite her World Ranking being far lower than required.

She will meet Daniella Hantuchova, an extremely accomplished if not top class player, who has bags of experience on the Women’s circuit. The Slovakian was tipped to become a Grand Slam Champion back in her teenage years; however she has failed to completely realise her full potential. She has however reached the semi finals of the US Open, and indeed a Wimbledon Quarter Final.

The match will be an excellent test for young Robson, however she will not be expected to win the match despite the large amounts of optimism and praise which has surrounded the Brit since she won the junior tournament at Wimbledon twelve months ago. The Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday June 22.
