Safin Prepares For Swansong

Wimbledon Live Staff - 10 Jun 2009

Dual Grand Slam Champion Marat Safin is preparing for his final swansong at Wimbledon this year.

The Russian will retire at the end of the season, and he has told how glad he will be to have the pressures of the circuit lifted from him. ‘"The routine kills me. It kills me. It's not interesting at all," said Safin.

Safin has also been notorious for his on-court tantrums, and his frequent abuse of his racket. Despite the violent tag, he has said that ‘he is happy if that is how he will be remembered.’ He also estimated that he has smashed around 700 rackets in his career, a waste of almost $15,000, without even taking fines into account.

His attitude appears to be one of a relieved and careless retiree, and his 350/1 odds with Paddy Power for Wimbledon success suggest that he will purely be participating at SW19 to say goodbye, and possibly even to entertain his supporters.
