Wimbledon 2011 - Robin Soderling v Philipp Petzschner live preview

David Cox - 21 Jun 2011
Robin Soderling is up against Halle champion Philipp Petzschner in a tough first round draw at Wimbledon 2011.

Soderling enjoyed one of his best Wimbledons last season, reaching the quarter-finals before pushing Rafa Nadal to four sets and the fifth seed will be hoping for more big things. He opted to take a couple of weeks off to practise after the French Open and it will be interesting to see how rusty he is on the grass as this is a very tough opener for him.

Petzschner loves the grass, winning the Wimbledon doubles title last year with Jurgen Melzer. He was a shock winner of the Halle title a couple of weeks ago, beating Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic along the way and he's capable of giving Soderling a real run for his money in this one.

Petzschner is an old-school serve-volley exponent with a massive serve and the early tournament conditions, where the ball skids and stays low, will suit him down to the ground.

Soderling has won both their previous matches though Petzschner took him to three sets in Halle back in 2008. The Swede needs to start fast today otherwise he could be in real trouble. Do not be surprised if this one goes five sets.
